Involvement With AIM: I have gone on the AIM trip for the past three years. I served as the President of AIM last year and the Programs/Fundraising Director the year before. Missions Work: Missions are a big part of my life -- more than anything else, I love to serve and be a part of what God is doing. I have participated on an AMOR trip to Juarez, Mexico for the last 7 years (4 years with First Presbyterian Church, Midland and 3 with Aggies in Mission). Throughout college, I served as a peer counselor at a local pregnancy center, Hope Pregnancy Center, ministering to girls facing unplanned pregnancies. At this point, I am planning on going to Uganda this summer on a short-term mission trip, and I hope to go to seminary in the next five years to get my counseling degree. How AIM Helped You: AIM helped me in more ways than I could fully describe - I have been involved in several different organizations before, but Aggies in Mission holds the most special place in my heart. I got to see firsthand through the trip the body of Christ at work - with 150 people coming together, it was amazing to see the Lord use everyone's unique gifts all together for His purpose. The people of Mexico remind me every year that true contentment and peace is found in Christ, not from material things. There are so many things I take for granted - I often fail to realize how truly blessed I am. I guess AIM taught me that true blessing and reward comes through serving and giving of yourself -- the Lord just needs a humble, willing heart to do His work!
Involvement With AIM: I decided to start a student organization at A&M that would bring Aggies down to Juarez during Spring Break. Well, lo and behold, one was already in existence. So, I changed my focus to bringing Corps members. After going back to Tijuana with my roommate the next year, we decided to head up a group of Corps folks, under the "umbrella" of the AIM organization, which we did my "first" senior year, bringing about 20 or so Corps guys and girls along with AIM. Finally, my Super Senior year was spent serving as AIM's VP, which was a true blessing to be involved in leading a group of brothers and sisters of that size. Missions Work: During my Sophomore year at A&M, I began praying that God would open the door for a mission opportunity during that summer. I prayed, looked all over the internet, talked to my pastor and family, and then Amor Ministries popped up. I knew immediately this was the door God wanted me to step through, so I applied for their summer internship program. After interviews, references and applications, I was accepted and spent the summer building houses in Tijuana, living in tents in the desert climate while loving and serving the church groups who came through one week at a time. How AIM Helped You: After that summer, I came back to A&M with a deepened commitment to Christ and a desire to continue in that ministry [which led to my leadership in AIM]. God was faithful and, I believe, has set the stage for even mightier works to glorify His Name! I am now working at GE in Dallas, but my experience with AIM has shown me that every moment walking in the Kingdom is a missionary moment, whether at church, in the office, at home or in Mexico. Everyone who knows me knows I am a Christian, even in an office of mostly non-believers, and they watch my every move. If my life matches my words and beliefs, then they can see the glory of God through me, which is more powerful than logic or argument! Recently, I have felt God's call into ministry. However the "who, what, where, when" type questions are not answered, I am waiting on the Lord's leading. Following God is truly an adventure! I believe that my involvement with AIM has given me a more global view of the Body of Christ, some cross-cultural understanding and a sense of God's desire to bring salvation and hope to the nations.
Involvement With AIM: I have gone on the AIM trip for the past three years and served on the Exec. council last year as the co-fundraising chair. I am currently thinking about participating again this Spring Break with AIM. Missions Work: I am currently serving in India as an intern for Engineering Ministries International where I am doing design and consulting work, mainly on schools, orphanages, churches, and hospitals, for other Christian NGO's here in South Asia. Our purpose here is to serve the poorest of the poor by equipping these organizations with the facilities and support they need to expand their outreach and minister more effectively to the people of South Asia. How AIM Helped You: Although Juarez, Mexico is quite different from northern India, I think there are some realities of life that are universal to almost all third-world countries or regions that my experiences with AIM helped prepare me for. Specifically, working with AIM really gave me a good perspective on how a large percentage of the world really lives. If you live your whole life in America it is easy to be fooled into thinking that the world is a happy and safe place, when in fact many places are dark, uncomfortable, inconvenient, and dangerous. Also, even if you recognize this fact, experiencing it firsthand is something completely different that will rock your world and really make you think about what is truly important in life. For me, AIM was the tool God used to expose me to these harsh realities. My time in Juarez has also taught me several other things that I have tried to apply to my practical daily life. I think one of the biggest has been seeking to live simply, being content with what I have and thankful for the blessings that God has given to me, and also realizing the responsibility I have to be a good steward of His gifts in light of the abundance He has given me compared to most of the people in the world. Seeing the way people live in third-world countries, even somewhere as close as Mexico, makes you realize how little you really need to live contentedly, and that if God has graced you with more than you need, then He also has some special purpose for you to use that abundance for. One other thing that AIM has helped teach me is that we all as believers in Christ have some part to play in missionary work, whether it is at home or abroad. AIM draws a lot of people from many different backgrounds, but Christ calls each one to the same work of being in community and sharing His love with others through serving them. The same should be true in our daily lives back home. No matter where we are at, we are called as a body to serve and love others, whether that be with a hammer or by some other means. It doesn't matter how naturally well-suited you are for the task because He will provide what you need. The important thing is that you obey His command to go. | |||||||||||||||
